VPL Fall 2010 #NYFW

Valentines day was a day to show love for one another. Well contrary to tradition, I showed my love for fashion instead. VPL definitely delivered on this one. No one can make me feel as good in soft silhouettes with a punk rock edge to it. From the crazy knitted bodysuit, to the sick jewelry pieces and of course the unforgettable dresses, it didn’t miss a single note. To start off, the jewelry was one thing that definitely caught my eye. Wooden pieces wrapped with yarns of different colors, shaped in the most abstract designs that you could not live without. I can’t forget the roped necklaces that doubled as belts, essential to every look that came down the runway. VPL, continued with its known designs for its structures and shapes. The paneling of dresses with the colors of tan, brown, and mauve filtered through out the body. The looks were definitely unforgettable. Something that will definitely be saved in my books of looks to check out in the magazines.

Rose Cordero Makes History on the Cover of Vogue Paris!

I came across this spread a few days ago, but I wanted to make sure I had my facts straight. According to the Cut and Models.com, Rose Cordero is the first black model to appear on the cover of Vogue Paris since Liya Kebede in 2002. I’m not going to make a fuss about it, it’s historical, however Rose continues to work and book shows and in my eyes that’s making history everyday. Thanks Vogue Paris for noticing!

Christian Cota Fall 2010 #NYFW (VIDEO)

Mexican-born designer Christian Cota’s Fall 2010 collection was filled with beautiful hand painted fabrics that were structured while offering an edgy feel for the fall. The collection, which dominated by cool colors, was made simple, clean and direct lines for a back-to-basics appeal. Inspired by Cubism, Cota who is known for his soft draping decided to see what would happen if he made a collection filled with structure. The outcome? A fun and polished collection from a young up and coming designer who wanted us to “look again” and we did.

The collection was filled with new and unique designs that we haven’t seen from the designer before. Three of the season’s prints were created in Cota’s bathroom and some of his dresses like the short, strapless faille gown in an abstract zebra print was actually two dresses in one: He made the first in black mesh, the other in the print, cut them apart, and then combined them. His designs, like a puzzle were ideas that he had pulled apart and put together again to create one graphic and futuristic look.

Where do I start with the looks? There were so many looks that I fall head over heads with that picking out a few seems unfair. A copper hand painted skyline v-neck dress was cute and edgy. The abstract cube textured chiffon v-neck drop waist dress is a perfect fit for almost any woman or if you want something with a little more edge, the lapis woven embroidery dress is the one for you. My favorite look, the metallic jacquard chiffon inset drape blouse with the metallic jacquard three-pleat shirt. I really wanted to take this home with me! Stylist Lauren Santo Domingo (you may know her from Vogue) did a wonderful job keep the vision clear and concise. The jewelry by Monique Pean was a perfect match; I love the stack of bangles that many of the models wore. The booties by Aldo are sure to be sold out in a matter of minutes.

The hair and makeup teams collaborated to create a beauty look that was elegant but still edgy, The make up wasn’t overpowering, rather it allow the focus on the clothing.

Makeup artist Hung Vanngo chose simple makeup with a strong accent on eyes with heavy eyeliner to complement the polished lines and bold colors of the collection. “The makeup is semi-matte, which looks quite pretty and natural,” said Vanngo.

Hair stylist Omar Lopez dyed and hair painted wigs to create an ombre effect. Hair went from light to dark and he predicts this will be a big trend for Fall.

Dashing Diva provided the nail products. The Nail Team created a special two-tone acryllic nail for this show. The nail starts with a dark purple shade called “Your Standing On My Dress” and fads into a lighter blue color called “Water Taxi.”

I left this show happy and looking forward to seeing more from Cota. However, if all this great fashion and extra glam doesn’t have you wanting more, maybe the fact that Anna Wintour was at the show will make you look again.

Beauty Spotlight: Poofs Reign Supreme at Carlos Campos

Carlos Campos was one of the many presentation during New York Fashion Week. It all went down far, far away from the tents at the Ampersand on Tenth Avenue. In New York, Tenth Avenue is just shy of the Hudson River and the closest train station is several blocks away. With those factors alone, infused with the bitter cold is enough to keep a fashionista away. I literally stopped several times on the way and had to give myself mini pep talks “Keep going Candace, it’s Fashion Week. You have to do this.” lol.. When I finally arrived, frozen limbs in all, I stepped into a garage which led to the party. Yes a party!

The place was packed to the gills with New York City Scene Socials. Every where I turned there was some deep networking conversation and I caught the glimpse of business cards being passed around. Now, this is fashion week! The Carlos Campos collection was just as spectacular. I think the designer really kept the New York girl in mind when crafting this collection. The line was mostly composed of jackets, slim pants, short party dresses and I loved every piece.

Also, the hair was very significant. During the duration of fashion week so far, I’ve been overwhelm with shignons, 50′s inspired waves, and full curly manes, but Campos offered something new. It was a twist between a slick back faux-hawk, pompadour poof. I spotted the hair stylist fluffing his girls on the end of the platform and chatted it up a bit about the inspiration.

Yuna Yang Fall 2010 #NYFW

New York Based Fashion Designer, Yuna Yang showed her collection at an ultra chic art gallery in Chelsea. Despite the cold and gloomy weather, Yang’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection was anything but. The use of rich vibrant colors, bold print and lots of different textures made this collection truly delightful.

It’s so refreshing to see a collection that ties in color with different textures to create classic yet modern clothing. Yuna’s inspiration for this line was from the 1930’s. She also uses her international experience and her artistic vision to develop a collection with couture quality yet ready-to-wear sensibility.

This line has everything for the fashion-forward woman who enjoys looking great at work, social events and at play.

Magalis Garcia New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 #NYFW

Twice a year we go through a large run of celebrating sightings, the chicest outfits coming to life and of course paps all over the city. What other time is it then the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. I began my fashion week on Friday heading down to the meatpacking district. While by passing the late great Alexander McQueen’s boutique to see the gates down and the white background, I stopped for a few minutes to take in the moment.

I gathered myself and walked down to 441 for the Magalis Garcia showing. Within the first minute of walking into the all black space I fell in love with the 50’s look. When asked what Magalis’ inspiration was, she said “It was an inspiration of street wear. I had problems so I went back to the metropolitan and saw a Matisse painting, and it helped to bring everything together.”

While looking at the clothes you can see she has a wide range for both the young, hip and the mature and chic. From the chocolate sweetheart silk dress embellished with a panel of eagle feathers, to the flowing evening gown in what looks like a rose cobblestone print draped across the body. Regardless of what the inspiration was she made it a splash with her deep dark charcoal colors and bright candy coats.

One of my favorite pieces was the shimmering silver dress with plenty of pleated details put together with a fur chocolate brown and ivory cape.

Garcia’s drapery skills were more than noticeable with extravagant but simplistic evening gowns. Pieces I would definitely love to get my hands on.

Robert Tonner New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 #NYFW

The collection was inspired by the heroine in a novel Robert Tonner recently finished writing. Fashion & Intelligence go hand & hand :0). She’s a young woman of much like today surfing cultural debris and information overload. All with a vintage twist. The collection, a myriad of color schemes including silver, pewter, iridescent gold, black and flickers of peony. There were a full range of textures appearing on every piece such as velvet, wool, tweed, silk taffeta, and chiffon.

One of my favorite pieces from the line was a pewter grey silk and metal lame cocktail dress. It had a triple layer asymmetrical bias skirt that just embrace the body so gracefully.

The best moment was when I got the chance to chat it up with Dwight from the Bravo series, The Real Housewives of Atlanta. He gave the people a show! Even though Dwight was tardy for the party, it was okay because he was just a breath of FUN. He took several pictures with everyone including myself and Robert Tonner. This was the best ever!

Mackage Fall 2010 #NYFW

Mackage was my first official runway show which was held at the Salon in the tents of Bryant Park. This was my first “experience” at the tents and it was not what I expected. When I arrived I was told that I was going to be standing but lucky for me I was able to grab a seat in third row. I’m familiar with Mackage from my good ol days of working retail at Lord & Taylor. I loved it then when it was all heavy $900 puffer jackets and I’m loving now as the company ventures off into women’s and men’s ready to wear. I am not a morning person at all but the collage of tweed and leather sheaths held my attention. The decision to take the Mackage from outerwear and into the fashion retail market was good one. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for spring. On the beauty front, I wish I could have snuck backstage to interview the stylist because the hair and makeup was unlike anything I’ve seen so far. Most of the models worked uneven cropped bobs with hair flowing in front of the face or their long mane was tucked in the collar of the coat. I’m all over this look for fall. There’s something in here for the guys too. Check out the pics below.
